Azerbaijan is a fascinating country which lies at a number of different crossroads whether cultural, geographical, religious or political. Situated between the Caucasus Mountains and the Caspian Sea, it is where Europe meets Asia, and where centuries of Turkic and Persian influence have overlapped and enriched one another.
Our journey begins in the vibrant capital Baku where historical and contemporary influences are visible side by side. We then traverse the breadth of the country to the former Silk Road cities of Shamakhi, Sheki and Gabala which are important cultural centres of Azerbaijan.
One of the highlights of this trip is the unique Gobustan region where ancient rock carvings depicting prehistoric life have been preserved in an arid landscape featuring mud volcanoes. As well as mosques of both the Shia and Sunni branches of Islam we will visit sacred places from other religious traditions such as the Church of Kish and the Zoroastrian temple of Ateshgah.
Still relatively untouched and blessed with natural resources and a buoyant economy, now is a great time to explore this charming land of contrasts. Join us for an amazing trip to Azerbaijan, where the Caucasus meets the Caspian!
